Increasing Robberies on Mulyanti Road Worry Travelers

Users of Mulyanti road in Mukono Central Division in Mukono municipality have raised alarm over the increasing cases of robberies involving a group of thugs riding motorcycles during evening hours. Mulyanti road starts from Mukono-Bugerere road at Total village stretching through to Agip Village where it connects to Kampala-Jinja highway at Ssaza village.  

A number of people and residents using the road to connect to their homes have complained of being terrorized by thugs riding on motorcycles who steal their valuables such as phones and handbags. Elly Nkalubo, the LC I Chairperson of Agip Cells confirms that several people especially pedestrians are targeted and sometimes people travelling on Boda bodas.   

According to Nkalubo, his office has registered thirty cases of robbery on this road during the night hours over the past two months. He says that some of the robbery victims escape with injuries especially when they try to resist the thugs.

URN has established that Mulyanti road is one of the roads that attract less traffic both during day and night. The most dangerous spot on the road is the stretch between the fences of Mukono Boarding Primary school and YMCA branch on the opposite side.

Garages and spare part shops, which are found Mulyanti road close early because of the curfew restrictions. On Tuesday evening, Dalton Yiga Matovu, a blogger and reporter with Simba FM in Mukono fell in ambush of men wearing face masks using two motorcycles. 

The thugs made off with Matovu’s bag containing a camera, recorder and laptop. He reported the matter to Mukono Police Division where one of the motorcycles he claims to have been in the attack was captured on the police CCTV system but its number could not be recognized since the number plate was folded.

Ruth Kabugo, a resident at Agip village is recovering from the bruises she sustained on her right hand while trying to fight for her bag. Beatrice Bakyazi, a resident of Takajjunge says that she was attacked on the road and her bag containing money and personal documents including the national ID taken.

Mukono Acting Division Police Commander, Ismael Kifude says they have learnt about the matter as well after receiving complaints from several people. Fatumah Ndisaba, the Mukono Resident District Commissioner has also acknowledged receiving complaints about the escalation of thefts on Mulyanti road. 

She also that there is also a team of teenagers involved in criminal activities on the same road, adding that she has instructed police to apprehend them.
