Relatives of Joan Aluro, who is believed to have been murdered over the weekend have stormed Ocomoi village in Asuret Sub County in Soroti district to avenge her death. Armed with sticks and stones, the angry mourner set ablaze a homestead belonging to John Omuron comprising of a permanent house and seven grass thatched house. They also killed several goats, chicken and turkeys.

It took the intervention of police to calm down the angry relatives of the deceased from wrecking more havoc. Aluro left her home on Saturday at about 3pm to go and wash her clothes at the well 300 meters away, but didn’t return home. Her body was recovered by police on Monday afternoon from an anthill a few meters from a swamp. Ben Patrick Ejoku, the LC2 chairperson Obule parish believes that the deceased was killed before her body was dumped next to the anthill.

On hearing the death of Aluro, her relative stormed her marital home demanding for bride price from her husband Emmanuel Olota because she was not officially married to him. They demanded for 15 cows, 12 goats and 2.8million shillings as part of bride price and transport expenses for their daughter. By 4:30pm, no decision had been reached as the relatives of Emmanuel Olota had fled the village. A team of heavily armed cops led by Otelu Eyattu, the Soroti Community Liaison Officer has deployed at the village to prevent a fresh outbreak of violence.
