Irate residents and local leaders of Bipong village, Labongo Amida sub-county in Kitgum have petitioned Christopher Omara, the Resident District Commissioner over alleged Police brutality.

The petition follows the brutal arrest of the area LC1 Chairperson Milton Oketch Ojwang and his subject Peter Lino on 5 January, 2019. The duo was arrested in connection with the burning of Capernaum Church of God Ministries.

The suspects were arrested on orders of the Church leader, Pastor Josephine Aketo. Established in 2014, the church has been facing resistance from residents and local leaders who question their style of devotion.

Emmanuel Oryema, the Labongo Amida Sub-County Area Councilor reveals that in August 2018, Kitgum district security committee closed the church to allow investigations into its unlawful activities but they have continued operating.

Oryema says because of bribery claims, the embattled church is accusing the community for stealing chairs, public address system, solar system and other building materials costed at 75 million shillings.
