Iron Bar Hit Men Return To Haunt Gulu

The latest victim is Richard Oryema, a senior four student of Gulu Army secondary school. He was attacked on Sunday about 100 metres away from the heavily guarded office of Gulu resident district commissioner, Captain Santos Okot Lapolo. Oryema succumbed to injuries on Tuesday night and a postmortem report from Gulu referral hospital indicated he was hit with a blunt object.

Residents of Gulu town are living in fear after a string of attacks believed to be perpetrated by iron bar hit men.

At least five people have reported being attacked by men wielding blunt objects over the last two months. They say their attackers waylaid them as they returned home between 8 and 10pm.

The latest victim is Richard Oryema, a senior four student of Gulu Army secondary school. He was attacked about 100 metres away from the heavily guarded office of Gulu resident district commissioner, Captain Santos Okot Lapolo. He was found left for dead on Sunday morning. 

Oryema succumbed to injuries on Tuesday night and a postmortem report from Gulu referral hospital indicated he was hit with a blunt object. 

The attack comes few weeks after Patrick Opiyo, a resident of Kasubi Central ward in Bar Dege division was found dead in Kaunda grounds. His body was found with a wound inflicted by a sharp object.

Three journalists are among the people that have reported being attacked by men holding bars. They say the attackers engage their victims in groups of twos as another lot attacks from behind. They demand for money and valuables.

In 2014, Police crackdown on suspected iron bar hit men arrested 19 people suspected to have been behind the brutal attack and killing of some 6 people.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa River Police spokesperson urged victims to work with Police to trap the attackers in their tracks.
