The newly appointed Assistant Sports Administrator and Trainer for the Islamic University in Uganda soccer club (IUIU SC), Mubaraka 'Wakaso' Kagwa, is determined to lead the team to a remarkable performance in this year's Pepsi University League. IUIU SC is set to face Victoria University later this evening at the IUIU main campus in Mbale city.

Kagwa, a former university captain with extensive experience in inter-university competitions, having played and captained the team for several years, brings valuable insights to the team. He also had a stint with the big-league side Kataka FC. Expressing his goals, Kagwa emphasized his commitment to ensuring the team advances past the group stages.

"I won't claim we are the outright favorites to win the trophy, but winning it is our primary target. With our vast experience in this competition, entering our fourth season, I believe all the players are ready, along with the entire technical team,” he said. In the previous season, IUIU SC faced challenges in getting out of their group, which included Bugema and Busitema universities.

This time around, they find themselves in Group B comprising Makerere University Business School-MUBS, Young Men’s Christian Association-YMCA, and Victoria University. Kagwa urged all fans to continue supporting the team with enthusiasm and promised them a similar performance to what they've witnessed in friendly games. With the departure of most senior players from the team due to eligibility constraints, including Ibandha Nelson, Phillip 'Gerald' Kagwa, and Simiyu Ngeywa, Kagwa assured that new faces have seamlessly integrated into the squad to fill the void.

"Due to our academic setup, some players' eligibility expires, for example, when they surpass the required age or graduate. However, those who qualify are all available in camp and ready to play." When asked about key players, Kagwa emphasized that there is no particular player the team will rely on, noting that each player is selected on merit according to their position.

Some of the new additions to the team include Shadat Musasizi, signed from Galaxy FC Tororo, who will play a crucial role as a goalkeeper, Emma Shikanga from Bugisu H/S, Mwenyi Joseph from Score FC, Kakaire Hamis from Jinja Progressive SS, among others. Notably, players like Captain Kawooya Imamu Shafic, Striker Isma Tamubula, Moses Kasule, Walwasa Leo, Onongo Denis, Pere Sudaisi, Mafabi Ashim, Sam Watuwa, and more are still part of the team.

According to Coach Kagwa, these players form the backbone upon which he plans to build another winning team. IUIU's best finish in the University leagues so far was in the quarter-finals in 2018, where they faced Bugema and lost 2-1 on aggregate.
