A jigger infestation has been reported in Ikumba and Kashambya sub counties in Kabale sending residents in panic. Lineo Bandaganire, the LC III chairperson Kashambya Sub County says that the most affected parishes are Kitunga and Nyakashebeya. Bandaganire attributes the jigger infestation to poor hygiene.
Medard Ayebare, a resident of Kitunga parish is one of the jigger victims. He denies the jigger infestation is a result of poor hygiene and instead blames it on witchcraft. Felix Muhire, a resident of Nyaruhanga Parish in Ikumba Sub County says more than 20 people are infested with jiggers. Silver Baguma, the LC V councilor Ikumba sub county has confirmed receiving reports of the jigger infestation in his area.
He says the local leaders have embarked on a sensitization campaign to eradicate the jiggers. James Turyaimuka, the Kabale district vector control officer says they are encouraging residents to use cow dung to smear their follows to seal off gaps that harbor fleas that cause jiggers.

In 2012, a major jigger infestation broke out in various districts in Busoga region forcing government to launch a massive eradication campaign. To date, several parts of Busoga are still affected the jiggers, which have made most of the affected people redundant as they can’t engage in any productive work.
