More than 2000 vendors from umber coat food market in Jinja Municipality have protested against eviction from a piece of land.

The said land is part of Gaddafi military barracks is located in Mpumudde, Kimaka Division.

The protest follows the eviction notice that was signed by Rosette Byengoma, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defense instructing the vendors to vacate land in a period of 90 days.

The vendors accused the division leaders of levying taxes on them even when they have a notice to vacate the market.

Laston Ngobi, the market vice chairperson claims that the vendors want the President to intervene in the matter because the time given to them is not enough.

Petra Nabukwasi, the Municipal Finance Officer who addressed the vendors on behalf of the town clerk says that the division signed a memorandum of understanding with UPDF in regards to operating a market on the land and had promised to allow them to construct a modern market.

“We signed a memorandum of understanding with UPDF in 2001 and they Okayed a market to be operated by Mpumudde Kimaka, division, in that space which was lying idle at the time and they even promised to allow us to construct a modern market but we are shocked by this eviction notice,” Nabukwasi says.

However, the UPDF spokesperson, Brig. Richard Karemire denied knowledge of the MOU and advised the vendors to vacate the land or risk forceful eviction.
