A joint funeral ceremony was held on Tuesday afternoon for the victims of the mudslides that struck villages in Sisiyi Sub County, Bulambuli district.

The joint prayers were conducted at Bulagana Catholic Church as the death toll from the landslides reached thirty.

One more body was recovered early on Tuesday by a group of local volunteers from Kimuli village, the scene of the Sunday night landslide.

A devastating mudslide on Monday morning buried nine homes in Sisiyi Sub-county killing most of the occupants.

The mudslide, which happened after a heavy downpour also destroyed crops, blocked roads and cut off electricity supply to several trading centers in the district.

Simon Maleza, a resident of Kibanda trading center which is about two hundred meters away from the landslide scene, says local defense unit personnel played a big role in the rescue effort.

Maleza says the LDUs alerted them early on Monday morning that disaster had struck the area and asked them to help in recovery efforts.
