The Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) in a joint operation with the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), on Wednesday recovered  weapons belonging to the Allied Democratic Force (ADF) rebels.

The recovered weapons includes a 60 mm mortar and two Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPG) launchers, one Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) shell, one sub machine gun (SMG), seven rounds of PKM, and one round of SMG ammunition.

Maj. Bilal Katamba, the Public Information Officer for the UPDF Mountain Division/Operation Shujaa in a statement said the weapons were found in Sector 3 near River Taliha Bridge in North Kivu Province, in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo during an intelligence-led operation conducted by the joint forces.

According to Maj. Katamba the weapons are believed to have been hidden by the running rebels when they were flashed out of Mwalika Valley by the joint forces in mid-last year.

The recovery of the weapons comes just a day after the joint forces killed one ADF terrorist and recovered one SMG gun in the general areas of Masizi, located 10 km northwest of Boga- in Ituri province.

“Relatedly, one ADF terrorist was put out of action and one SMG recovered on 7 May 2024 by the joint forces in the general areas of Masizi,10 km northwest of Boga- in Ituri province”, reads the UPDF statement.

In November 2021, Uganda and DR Congo signed a Memorandum of Understanding to conduct a joint military operation code named Operation Shujaa against the ADF in the eastern part of the country following escalated attacks in both countries.

Meanwhile in September 2023, the DR Congo government allowed the joint forces to expand their operations to new areas in order to go after fleeing ADF fighters.

In January 2023, The Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Jacob Oboth told parliament that the operations of the UPDF in the DR Congo in 2022 alone, 424 ADF terrorists were killed, 81 others were captured, 115 abductees were rescued and 118 firearms with assorted ammunition and 10 Improvised explosive devices were recovered.
