Kabale Men Shun Family Planning Services

Research conducted by the district health department in partnership with Kabale Women in Development KWID a Community Based Organisation indicates that the turn up of men in 2017 in both public and private health facilities was at only 20 percent, while for women was over 70 percent.

Men in Kabale District are yet to embrace family planning methods as a way of controlling population growth.

Currently, major family planning methods for men include; vasectomy, use of condoms and coitus interruptus commonly known as withdrawal method.

According to Kabale acting District Health Officer, Immaculate Mandela several men in the district are shying away from the services despite efforts by the health department to popularize the services.

Mandela says that research conducted by the district health department in partnership with Kabale Women in Development (KWID), a Community Based Organisation indicates that the turn up of men in 2017 in both public and private health facilities was at only 20 percent, while for women it was over 70 percent.

Mandela says that most men in Kabale are yet to understand that child spacing plays a big role in development especially at family level.

The Executive Director of Kabale Women in Development Florence Tumuheirwe attributes the failure by men to embrace family planning to African Myth and misconceptions. She explains that men believe that they are supposed to have as many children as they can.

Julius Baruya, the Kabale District Chairperson for Health Committee says that all the available family planning methods don't favour men. He says that some men fear to undergoing a vasectomy surgery.

Kabale District Senior Labour Officer, Switzen Ndyabaho says that most men have failed to adopt family planning methods due to lack of information about its advantages.
