Kabale Municipality has suspended the collection of street parking fees until further notice citing failure by the contractor to follow the set guidelines.

Kabale Municipal council contracted Danson Mujuni in August 2018 to collect parking fees on Kabale Main Street, Kigongi Street, Keita road, Nkunda road, Nyerere Street and Nyerere Avenue.

The contractor was expected to charge each vehicle Shillings 300 per hour. Joseph Monday, the Kabale Municipality Town Clerk, says the contractor was expected to remit 750,000 to the council every two weeks, which he had failed to do.

He says they introduced the parking fees with intentions of increasing local revenue, which has failed because the contractor is cheating the municipality.

Emmanuel Sentaro Byamugisha, the Kabale Municipal Mayor, says they terminated Mujuni's contract following several complaints implicating him for overcharging motorists.

Byamugisha says Mujuni has been charging motorists Shillings 250,000 for parking wrongly instead of the agreed Shillings 20.000.

He says they have already notified police and Kabale Resident District Commissioner to apprehend Mujuni should he continue collecting parking fees.

Danson Mujuni declined to comment on the matter.  In the past, some of the motorists accused Mujuni for increasing parking fees from Shillings 300 to Shillings 500 without clear reasons and issuing them receipts without serial numbers.
