Byamukama was impeached on Saturday afternoon during a special branch delegates conference that was held at Kabale Secondary School Main hall in Kabale Municipality. The meeting was chaired by Francis Ochenga, the UNATU National Chairperson in-charge of discipline Committee and Richard Mwebaze, the UNATU legal officer.

Bright Byamukama, the chairperson of Uganda National Teachers’ Union
(UNATU) in Kabale district has been impeached over abuse of office.
Byamukama was impeached during a
special branch delegates conference held at Kabale Secondary School
Main hall in Kabale Municipality on Saturday.
During the meeting, chaired by Francis Ochenga,
the UNATU National Chairperson in-charge of discipline Committee and Richard
Mwebaze, the UNATU legal officer, delegates accused
Byamugisha of swindling two million Shillings from members’ savings. Byamugisha
was also accused of forging accountabilities and under declaring union
branch funds.
Members also accused him of forging signatures of principal
signatories to the group accounts and stealthily withdrawing funds from the branch account in DFCU
bank Kabale branch.
As a result, members
impeached him with immediate effect. Members also elected unopposed, Alfred
Katurebe who has been serving as the Chairperson for Rubaya Sub county as the
District chairperson.
Ochenga says that Byamukama’s behavior is disturbing and condemned him for ashaming the teaching profession with such a bad example. He adds that Byamukama will face appropriate sanctions for failing to promote transparency.

In his defense, Byamukama made an oral and written apology acknowledging the flaws.
