The Youth in Kabale District are struggling to access friendly sexual and reproductive health services.

Youth-friendly services are policies and attributes that attract young people to a variety of reproductive health.  However, in Kabale district, the services are only at Kabale regional referral hospital and Kamukira Health Centre IV, Kabale Municipality.

None of the schools and tertiary institutions offers such services to the youth.

As a result, the rate of teenage pregnancy has increased, since many of the youth are unable to trek long distances to seek the services at the two facilities.

Statistics from the District Health Office indicate that 4,400 girls aged between 13-20 years, were impregnated last year. Since the beginning of the year, the district has recorded 225 cases of pregnancy among girls aged between 14 and 18 years.

Alfred Besigensi, the Kabale District Health Educator says that statistics indicate that out of 12,208 youth who turned up seeking for youth-friendly services in both private and government health facilities in 2017, only 526 received services family planning services.

Besigensi says that lack of such services has put the youth at a risk of acquiring unwanted pregnancies, sexual transmitted diseases and abortion.

Muhamad Byaruhanga, a youth from Upper Bugongi ward, Kabale Municipality says that most of the youth especially at village level are ignorant about the services.

Byaruhanga says that even a few facilities that offer such services are not known to the youth.

He faults the district health officials for failure to popularize the services at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital and Kamukira Health Centre IV.
