The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga commits to support a project that seeks to stop teenage pregnancies and keep girls in schools, under the stewardship of Miss Uganda Quiin Abenakyo.

Abenakyo, who has crowned Miss World Africa at the Miss World Finale, in the southern tropical Chinese province of Hainan, last month, has embarked on an aggressive campaign to support girls who drop out of school as a result of pregnancies and child marriages.

According to the Uganda Demographic Health Survey (UDHS) 2016 report, 25 percent of adolescents aged 15-19 in Uganda have begun childbearing, and therefore unable to complete the education cycle.

The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga says that the project fronted by Abenakyo is impressive and could be a turning point for millions of girls in Uganda and Africa, who have dropped out of school as a result of pregnancies and early marriages.  She said that parliament is committed to lobbying for support to ensure that the project takes shape.

"It's my commitment to support Abenakyo in order for her plans to succeed as Miss Uganda and Miss Africa," Kadaga said during a meeting with Abenakyo and a team from Miss Uganda today. The meeting was held at Parliament.

Abenakyo called on Ugandan youths to follow their passion and not only be driven by the desire to make money. She said many young men and women have their dreams dying because their parents do not support their desired careers.

She adds that her hope is to restore the hope of school girls by supporting them and making their challenges known to the world.

Janet Nalugya, the Miss Uganda Foundation Projects Director says it's time for parents and Ugandans to rethink their children's passion looking at the results being produced. She says several Ugandans need to tap into the many opportunities in the arts industry.

She says they train the beauty queens in life skills.
