David Ojwang Omboko has been declared winner of the 2013 Kakira Sugarcane Growers Association – BSGA elections at Kakira sugar factory hall.

The winner, who will be chairman BSGA after being sworn, was announced after one month of campaigns in the ten districts of Busoga.

Omboko garnered 1416 votes to beat his closest rival by 194 votes to win the highly contested election on Sunday. The election attracted four candidates from sugarcane out-growers within Busoga region. Omboko bounces back after serving in the same position since 2008 when he was first elected.

Isa Budhugo came in second position with 1222 votes, while Abubaker Tibiita got 212 votes. George Melegulwa came last with 125 votes.

All the losers have conceded defeat although during the campaigns they accused David Ojwang Omboko of siding with Kakira sugar factory management by not attending to the grievances of the sugarcane out-growers.

Samuel Mugweri, Kakira BSGA’s returning officer said 7018 farmers registered to vote, but less than half of the registered voters turned up.

Sulaiman Muyomba, an out-grower from Waibuga Sub County in Luuka district, blames the poor turn-up on lack of transport. He says most of the out-growers from the ten districts of Busoga did not have enough transport.

Omboko pledged to build stronger departments in BSGA especially in fighting for out-grower’s rights and privileges from Kakira sugar factory. These include availing of scholarships to out-growers’ children, better pay per ton of sugarcane sold to Kakira sugar factory and strengthening BSGA’s credit scheme.

Omboko is a prominent sugarcane farmer with over 1000 acres of cane plantations and hundreds of transporting vehicles within Busoga region.
