Buildings that were constructed by the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in Kampiringisa have been identified for the establishment of a COVID-19 quarantine centre in Mpigi district.

Rose Byabasaija, the chairperson of the district COVID-19 task force says that the move follows a request by the Ministry of Health to identify a structure where COVID-19 patients can be hosted when the numbers escalate. Uganda has cumulatively recorded 889 cases of COVID-19, the latest of which were picked from communities.

Byabasaija told Uganda Radio Network that amidst fears of increased community infections, the district needs to have more space to contact suspected COVID-19 patients. She says that the selected buildings built within the precincts of Kampiringisa Remand Home were constructed in 2014 to train local leaders and the communities from different parts of the country in modern farming practices.

They were handed over to the Mpigi district administration when the training project ended in 2019.

However, Byabasaija says that although the quarantine centre is not yet confirmed, the district is ready to handle a limited number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 from the isolation centre located within Mpigi Health Centre IV.

//Cue in; actually as we...

Cue out... ready for use.”//

Meanwhile, Byabasaija says that inadequacy of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) remains one of the biggest challenges facing Mpigi district in the fight against the pandemic. She explains that when the Ministry of Health disbursed a consignment of PPEs for Mpigi, it only thought about the isolation centre and left out the rest of the 46 health units across the district.

//Cue in; as we talk...

Cue out... the entire district.”//
