Kanungu Health Workers Lay Down Tools Over Unpaid Salaries

More than 300 health workers in Kanungu district have laid down their tools demanding the payment of their salary arrears. Some of the health workers have not received any pay since February this year when their names were deleted from the pay roll while others claim to receive less money than what they entitled too. The health workers under Uganda National Midwives Union –Kanungu branch accused the public service ministry of falling to address the salary mess.

The most affected health workers are from Kihihi health Center Four and Kambuga Hospital. Some hospital staff such as accountants, security guards and records assistants are also affected.  Saturday Nason, the secretary general Uganda National Midwives union-Kanungu branch says they have repeatedly written to the Ministry of public service to clear their salary arrears in vain.

Nason says the most health workers are senior officials in charge of the day to day operation of health facilities.

Dr. Stephen Sebude, the Kanungu district medical officer has confirmed the health workers strike saying its greatly affected health service delivery. He says Daniel Kasudha the only doctor and medical superintendent of Kambuga Hospital has also laid down his tools.

Sebude says it has become hard for the district authorities to convince the health workers to continue working since the negotiations have dragged on for long without yielding results. He says the district leadership is scheduled to convene a meeting with the health workers to chat away forward.

Kanungu district director of health services Dr.Stephen Sebude told Uganda Radio network that it is true that the health workers have laid down tools and that this is having serious effects on the patients in the district. Sebude says that it has become hard for the district authorities to convince the health workers not to lay down tools since the negotiations have been on for long and they do not actually yield results.

 

He further revealed that the worker district leadership was set to hold an emergency meeting to forge the way forward as even the districts only doctor one Kasudha Daniel who also doubles as the Medical superintendent at Kambuga Hospital has also laid down his tools.
