A total of 120 cows have been paid out to two Karimojong families as compensation from Turkana pastoralists for mistakenly killing their relatives in Kaabong district. The incident happened 192 kilometres, North West of Moroto town.

However, the identity of families who received the compensation remains concealed for security reasons.

Peter Lokoel, the Deputy Governor Turkana county government confirms Turkana paying 120 cows to the Karimojong, of the Dodoth ethnicity. He clarifies that the killing were a mistaken identity saying wrong group on the fateful day raided Turkana cows in Loyoro Sub County. Angered by the action from the Dodoth, he notes that they instead killed the two boys also tending to animals along the track. He asks the pastoralists to offer help to their fellow herders in case of loss of animals appealing them to desist from the archaic culture of raiding animals.

Andrew Keem Napaja, an elder in Moroto district says the compensation is to rehabilitate and instill discipline among the community. He adds the compensation is a fall back to the families hence reduction in violence. He notes that the payout is a fair imitation to protect lives among the pastoralists. He challenged the pastoralists to desist from killing each other saying such acts hold back economic gains of a family. He however appeals to the communities to desist from killing each other.

Meanwhile, Okot Obwona, the Regional Police Commander Moroto area condemns that act saying it’s criminal to practice such redress and whoever does it, it’s illegal. He advises the pastoralists to embrace the modern justice system against that traditional saying a proper method of doing issues should be followed.

Traditionally, loss of human lives was rare among the pastoralists and when this occurs, compensation of 60 animals is paid to the families in case of death.
