Records from Agago district authorities indicate that by September 2022, rustlers had stolen 3,657 animals, killed 23 people, and caused significant damage to crops and property. While recent incidents have not resulted in deaths, it indicates the persistent threat to livelihoods in the region.
Karimojong cattle rustlers have raided Lira-Kato and Kuywe
sub-counties in Agago District, stealing 26 goats.
Kite Ojok, the Lira-Kato
sub-county Chairperson, says that the raid has caused panic in the area. He asked the security forces to heighten the deployment and recovery of all the stolen
animals.

Ben Ocan, Kuywe sub-county
chairperson III, revealed that two goats were stolen in his area and are yet to be recovered. "These rustlers operate at night to avoid security
forces. Their footprints are often visible, but they are careful not to engage
directly. The Uganda People’s Defense Force’s (UPDF) presence has greatly
reduced violence, but the threat remains."

Leonard Ojok Opio, the
Agago LCV Chairperson expressed concern over the resurgence of cattle
raids. "Our people are living in fear again. These incidents are a
painful reminder of the past when lives were lost, and properties destroyed.
Out of the 26 stolen goats, only five have been recovered so far." He
urged locals to remain alert and support security efforts.
