Tonny Ssempebwa, the Kasangati Town Council LC III Chairperson in Wakiso district is still in custody at Hoima Central Police station following his arrest on Tuesday afternoon.

He was picked up on Tuesday afternoon in Duhaga cell Kahoora division Hoima Municipality near the Hoima Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party offices for allegedly campaigning using a government vehicle.

He was intercepted while planning to attend the campaign rally of Asinasi Kamanda Nyakato, the FDC candidate for the Hoima Woman parliamentary by election at Kigorobya Sub County.

Ssempebwa was using a government Double cabin registration number LG0039-109 that belongs to Kasangati town council.

According to police, at the time of arrest, Ssempebwa was found distributing red berets, which are used by people power activists. Police impounded the vehicle and towed it to Hoima central police station where it is parked.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, says they are processing Ssempebwa’s case file so as to prosecute him for abuse of office.

The Hoima woman MP seat fell vacant after the incumbent, Tophace Kaahwa Byagira opted to represent the people of the newly created Kikuube district that was carved out of Hoima and became operational on July 1, 2018.      Nyakato is facing off with NRM’s Harriet Businge Mugenyi.
