The recent cholera outbreak in Kasese has been contained according to the Health Ministry.

At least 112 people were affected by the outbreak that was announced on Monday this week.

The outbreak claimed the lives of three people. The victims were rushed to Bwera Hospital, about 5 Kilometers from the Uganda-Democratic Republic of Congo border where they were admitted in the isolation ward.

Vivian Ssewanja, the Health Ministry Public Relations Officer, says only six people are still under observation at Bwera Hospital.

Ssewanja says 103 other affected people were discharged after being given a clean bill of health. She urges the people in Kasese and particular Nyakiyambu sub-county-where the outbreak was reported, not to panic.

"People shouldn't panic because we have the current situation under control. Our health team will remain on the ground until zero cases of cholera are reported."

The Ministry plans to carry out cholera immunization in fishing communities in endemic areas starting in February next year. Ssewanja says they decided to start with the fishing communities because 60% of the cholera cases reported in the country are found in fishing communities.

The targeted communities are found in Bulisa, Pakwach, Hoima and some parts of Kasese district.
