Kasese RDC Orders Arrest of Health Worker over Bribe

Kandabu is being accused of allegedly refusing to attend to a patient Bridget Biira who had undergone an episiotomy operation at the facility. It is alleged that Kandabu demanded 10,000 shillings before she could attend to Biira.

The Kasese Resident District Commissioner, Lt. Joe Walusimbi, has ordered for the arrest of the maternity in-charge at Kasese Municipal Health Centre III, Grace Kandabu. 

Lt. Walusimbi made the order on Friday during a visit to the health facility after receiving reports from a number of patients that the medics were soliciting money from them.

Kandabu is being accused of allegedly refusing to attend to a patient Bridget Biira who had undergone an episiotomy operation on delivering at the facility.

It is alleged that Kandabu demanded 10,000 shillings before she could attend to Biira.

Biira says that she did not have the money at the time it was demanded. She also said she was worried that she could contract some strange diseases if not attended to in time in addition to experiencing a lot of pain.

The Kasese District Health Officer, Dr Yusuf Baseke said that the act was against the law and the professional ethics of the health workers.

Joy Biira, another patient at the health centre also revealed that at all times she has come to the facility, she does pay not less than 5,000 to the health workers.

Biira revealed that there was a time she even paid 30,000 shillings to the health worker before she could be attended.

Baseke said investigations into the matter will commence so as to bring the suspect to book in accordance with the law.

Walusimbi says Kandabu will work as an example to the rest of the health workers who are fond of soliciting bribes from patients before attending to them.
