Residents of Kathero Cell in Kampukamabwe ward in Mpondwe-Lubiriha town council have opened Customs-Karambi-Kamasasa road. The road has been impassable for nearly three months after it was blocked by mud.

However, a group of residents led by their LC I Chairperson Selvest Masereka Mapoze embarked on opening up the road on Wednesday last week.  Mapoze said over 30 residents abandoned their work to open up the road.

He says that although the road was tendered out for routine maintenance, it hasn\'t been worked on for over a year.

Cue Out……..Upper Customs…//

He says the road becomes muddy and slippery during the rainy season. Mapoze says traders who walk from Kitholhu sub-county, Kisolholho and Mirami villages in Karambi sub-county have been facing it rough currently.

The road connects to Lubiriha market, which operates on Tuesday and Friday. It attracts thousands of traders from both Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Jackson Bwambale, a resident of Kisolho in Karambi Sub County faults district authorities for failing to maintain the road. He says at least two motorcycle boda boda riders sleep off the road and sustain injuries every time it rains.

John Muhindo Zoze, the Lubiriha Town Council engineer says they suspended the routine maintenance of the road at the end of the 2014/2015 financial year due to limited funds. He also says the town council has only 15 routine road maintenance workers who are not sufficient for the entire road network.

Muhindo commended residents for opening the road as the town council plans for the next financial year.
