The Town Clerk Geoffrey Muganga says that the operation which was spearheaded by the public health department was aimed at cleaning the area and also safeguarding public health.
Katabi Town
Council authorities on Wednesday evicted traders along the Kampala-Entebbe
Road. The traders were operating in Mpala, Nkumba, and Abayita-ababiri.
The Town
Clerk Geoffrey Muganga says that the operation which was spearheaded by the
public health department was aimed at cleaning the area and also safeguarding
public health.
Muganga explained that dirt and garbage along the roads had
reached intolerable levels despite several discussions with the concerned
vendors.
According to
Muganga, were leaving garbage they generated where they worked while others,
were serving customers in unhygienic places, putting lives at risk.

Aisha
Namusoke accused the Town Council authorities of being inconsiderate to the
poor who have families to feed, children to educate, and also pay for housing. Vendors
operating roadside kiosks said it was disappointing that they had just paid license
fees and had their kiosks destroyed and taken without giving them chance to
safely remove their merchandise.
But Muganga
said, the council had been considerate for some time but the vendors had abused
the leniency.
According to
the Town council guidelines, the roadside vendors had to operate from 4:00 pm
but the vendors had become full-time operators in violation of the
arrangement.
But the vendors
argue that opening up late hours would be forcing them to operate into late
hours yet the night is not safe, with so many criminals in the area.
