Katende, Serugo Await Olympics Draw

Boxers Ronald Serugo and Kennedy Katende will be Uganda's first athletes to take to the field this weekend when the 2016 Olympic Games start in Rio de Jeneiro, Brazil.

The draw for the 286 boxers will be made on Thursday in Barra, Rio de Jenairo, according to Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) official and Chef de Mission, Ambrose Tashobya who is already in Brazil.

The light-flyweights, lightweights and light-heavyweights are slated to take to the ring on Saturday. But before the boxing starts football will open the Games on Friday ahead of the official opening ceremony.

Serugo who is in the flyweight category (52kg) to avoid the likes of Cuba's Yosvany Veitia who qualified from the 2015 World Amateur Boxing Championship together with Mohamed Flissi (Algeria) and England's Muhammad Ali.

In the light heavy weight (81kg) Katende will hope to avoid Juan Carlos Carrillo (Colombia) and Russia's Petr Khamukov in the first round.

Besides the two boxers Uganda will also have two swimmers taking part in the Games and 17 track and field athletes who will be led by 2012 Olympic Games gold medalist Stephen Kiprotich and Solom Mutai. Bugema University student Joshua Kiprui is captain of the team.
