Amugoli General Enterprises Limited, a construction company contracted to upgrade Katuna one-stop border post at the Uganda-Rwanda border of Katuna town council is on spot for illegally encroaching on land and declining to compensate the owner.

Dalton Byakatonda, a resident of Kihengamo Village, in Katuna Town Council, Kabale District says that in 2020, workers of Amugoli General Enterprises Limited illegally trespassed on his quarter-acre of land with excavators and started extracting murram and soil.

Byakatonda says that the workers connived with his neighbor who claimed ownership of the land. He explains that the excavators destroyed a house that was on the land.

According to Byakatonda, efforts to stop the workers from extracting murram were futile after they threatened to harm him.

He wants the company to compensate him with 50 Million Shillings, which he will use to buy a new house and land.

Godfrey Nyakahuma, the Kabale Resident District Commissioner confirms says that investigations conducted by his office and police indicate that Byakatonda’s rights were infringed on by the company. He adds that Byakatonda is struggling to accommodate his wife and children.

He says that the company has given an ultimatum of one month to address the matter.

But Engineer Robert Joseph Oriono Eyatu, the Managing Director, Amugoli General Enterprises Limited argues that Byakatonda’s house could have been destroyed by landslides since it was built on a steep hill.

Oriono also says that because the company had bought murram from Katabarwa, company workers extracted the whole of that area assuming that Katabarwa had made a private arrangement with Byakatonda.   Oriono also says that should have raised a complaint with the company during the time of extraction.

This is not the first time the company is on the spot. In November, leaders accused the company of failing to repair Nyinamuronzi-Karujanga and Kamugaguzi-Nyamirima roads after being destroyed by the trucks while transporting soil to construct the one-stop border post.
