Uganda's top Squash players Michael Kawooya and Ian Rukunya Kajubu on Thursday recorded wins in their first round games on Day 1 of the start of  the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Kawooya was in good form at the Oxenford Studios in Gold Coast, Queensland as he needed only 20 minutes to defeat Papua New Guinea's Madako Junior Suari 12-10, 11-3, 11-6 to book a place in the second round. “ I was a little nervous in the first game, but got my act together and played well,” Kawooya told URN.

Rukunya who is making his third appearance at the Commonwealth Games also picked a 3-0 win over Fiji's Stephen Henry. But Rukunya will face a tough test against top seed Nick Matthew in round 2 later in the evening, while Kawooya takes on England's Daryl Selby.

Matthew is bidding for a third successive gold in his final season as a professional. The 37-year-old former world No.1 from Sheffield, a three-time World Champion, reached the semi-finals in his first appearance in the Games in 2006 in Melbourne before striking gold in 2010 and 2014 in Delhi and Glasgow, respectively.

In Swimming Uganda's Tibatemwa Ekirikubinza failed to qualify for the next round in the men's 50m butterfly. He finished second in Heat 1 with a time of 27.17, but recorded one of the slowest times among the 46 swimmers in the category.
