The construction works at Kayunga main hospital have disrupted service delivery to residents.

The works involve the expansion and renovation of the old buildings and construction of an emergency department, administration block, theater, out and in-patient wards, 130 staff houses and sewage lagoon.

As a result, only one block is being used to serve residents. Several departments have been merged. Services such as maternal health care and the HIV clinic have been transferred to the District Youth Recreation Center, which is partly occupied by staff from Makerere University Walter Reed Project-MUWRP.

The same building is also temporary hosting the hospital administration. The hospital is currently referring all patients in need of specialized health services to Kangulumira Health Center IV.

Although the Kayunga District Health Officer, Dr. Ahammed Matovu, says they only make a few referrals, a health worker told URN on condition of anonymity that some patients are sent back to health IIIs in their sub counties for treatment.

“A big number of people flock here especially those from Kayunga town council and rural; it is the hospital they used too so going to Kangulumira is sometimes hard but we just force them depending on the congestion here as you can see the space is too limited,” she said.

She also said that the few available medical workers are over stretched because some of their colleague left after government failed to secure for them provisional accommodation given the short notice they were given to vacate the hospital quarters for renovation.

Dr. Matovu says they transferred some of their staff to other health units in the district to handle patients from various sub counties. He further reveals that they offer specialized treatment such as surgery, dental services and at Kangulumira HCIV

It takes one to travel over twenty-five kilometers from Kayunga main hospital to Kangulumira Health center on a boda boda at Shillings 6, 000 to and from.

Peter Musamya, who our reporter found at Kayunga ward B, says most of patients who can’t afford the transport costs end up returning to their homes.

Government secured Shillings 70B to renovate and expand Kayunga Main Hospital. Arab Contractors Uganda Limited was contracted to execute the works and expected to complete by 2020.

Engineer Hytham Elderby, the project manager at Arab contractors, says they are trying their best to complete the works before 2020.
