The 2012 FIBA Africa Zone 5 Club Championship starts on Monday afternoon with women’s home side KCCA Leopards facing a tough hurdle against Burundi’s Berco Stars in the opening match at Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
The Leopards, who are pooled in group A alongside Jeshi Stars (Tanzania), Berco Stars and the defending champions KPA from Kenya, will have to be at their best to pick an early victory if they think of avoiding early elimination.
Ali Balunywa, the spokesperson of the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUFA), told Uganda Radio Network on Monday that they had decided to play one game before the official opening ceremony at 6pm at Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
According to the program, Kyambogo Warriors, another Ugandan side, will take to the court at 7pm against Rwanda’s Espoir in a men’s game, before UCU Canons battle Kenya’s Eagle Wings in the last women’s game of the day.
The Warriors are also pooled alongside defending champions Urunani from Burundi and Tanzania’s Savio. Uganda’s League champions DMark Power will have to battle their way in the group that has Tanzania’s ABC, KBC (Kenya) and South Sudan.
The championship that ends on August 26 will be played at Lugogo Indoor Stadium and the Makerere University Basketball Court. The winners will represent the Zone in the Africa Cup of Nations Basketball Championships
