More than 200 senior four candidates of Kigezi high school in Kabale district abandoned the school on Monday citing harassment by the administration and their senior six colleagues. The candidates, who were due to sit their mock exams, said they decided to walk away from the school after realizing it was no longer safe for them. This came after 7 senior four students were assaulted on Saturday night by their senior six colleagues. The assault victims are hospitalized at Rugarama hospital in Kabale municipality with bodily injuries.

It all started on Saturday after an unidentified senior six candidate allegedly attacked a senior four student in the dining hall and took off with his plate of meat. His classmates intervened to question the conduct of their senior six colleagues, sparking off tension on both parties. It is alleged that the senior six candidates attacked their senior four colleagues on Saturday and beat them up injuring seven students.  According to the senior four students, the administration also sided with senior six students and told them to punish their junior colleagues, which resulted in serious clashes.

The ensuing confusion prompted the senior four students to report the matter at Kabale Central Police station. They accused their head teacher of failing to intervene into the matter.  Police promptly deployed at the school, with the senior candidates demanding the administration takes action against the errant senior six students in vain. As a result, the senior four candidates packed their belongings on Monday and left the school premises saying, they will only return when sanity prevails.  Bosco Arop, the Kibale district Police commander told URN on the Monday that they were consulting with the school administration to end the standoff.

He asked the senior four students to calm down saying their issues are being locked into by security and the school administration. Kigezi high school has been in a state of confusion since the beginning of this year. In February this year, Eliphaz Twinobuhungiro, the then school head teacher was sacked over the deteriorating conditions of the school.  Trouble for Twinobuhungiro started after the theft of 40 computers from the school Laboratory, text books and declining performance both in senior four and six exams amongst others.

On June 13th 2013, 15 students of the same school were arrested by police following confusion at the school that saw hundreds of students go on a hunger strike. The sacking of the old head teacher and bringing in another seems to have failed to solve the school’s problems.
