Kateebire told Uganda Radio Network at Kabale Central Station that police picked him from Garage Street in Central division where he and five other party members were planning to storm Kabale Police station to inquire why the banners and posters of their presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi and others are always confiscated and defaced by police.
The Kigezi Region National Unity
Platform-NUP General Secretary Derrick Kateebire is in custody at Kabale
Central Police Station.
Kateebire was picked up by the Anti-riot police from
Kabale town on Tuesday and whisked off to Kabale central police station.
Kateebire, who is also the NUP
candidate for the LC IV councilor’s seat in Central Division in Kabale
municipality was found with several placards with messages directed at the
police.
“We want our banner you stole from Esso Lorry Park”. “Kabale RDC and DPC stop
harassing Co-coordinator Katebire.” As NUP; we are ready to secure the future ourselves,”
read some of the placards.
Kateebire told Uganda Radio Network at Kabale Central Station that police picked
him from Garage Street in Central division where he and five other party members were planning
to storm Kabale Police station to inquire why the banners and posters of their
presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi and others are always confiscated and
defaced by police.

Kabale District Police Commander, Brian Ampeire, said the NUP official was
picked up on charges of doing an act that is likely to spread an infectious
disease.
He said that it is not the role of police to confiscate posters of
candidates and dismissed Kateebire’s claims as baseless.

Kateebire’s lawyer Godwin Masereka from Bitwenda and Company Advocates said the
charge against his client contravenes the law since he was not demonstrating
when he was arrested.

This is the second time Kateebire is being arrested on the same charges. On

celebrate the nomination of the NUP presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi
Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine.
