Kinyara Sugar Works Employees Strike

Workers at Kinyara Sugar Works Limited in Masindi district have laid down their tools to protest harsh working conditions. 

One of the employees told URN on condition of anonymity that the strike started from the Agricultural workshop department last week before spreading to employees in other departments on Monday morning.

The workers laid down their tools protesting the dismissal of their colleagues, low payment, ongoing rumors that the company intends to cut their pay and failure to confirm majority of their appointment. 

The workers also accuse the Senior Human Resource Officer, Moses Kabila of arrogance. They have vowed not to return to work unless their issues are solved. 

Kirunda Magoola, the Communications Officer Kinyara Sugar works Limited hasn't yet comment as he couldn't pick repeated calls from our reporter. The Budongo Sub county LC 3 Chairperson, Keneth Nyendwaha where the factory is located has confirmed the strike, saying work has grounded to a halt.

He calls on the Company managers to immediately address the concerns of the striking workers. Julius Hakiiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, says police has deployed at the company premises to prevent the striking workers from turning violent.

In 2014, workers at the same Company laid down their tools protesting delayed payments among other things.
