Jacob Kiplimo has won the first medal for Uganda at the on-going 2018 IAAF World U20 Championship in Finland.

The 18-year old won a silver medal in the 10,000m final at the Ratina Stadium in the Town of Tampere on Tuesday evening.

Kiplimo clocked 27:40.36 to finish behind Kenya's Rhonex Kipruto (27:21.08).

“We are happy that Kiplimo has won our first medal at the Championship,” a happy president of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), Dominic Otucet told URN.

Last year the 18-year old Kiplimo won a gold in the men's U20 race at the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Kampala and also finished fourth place in the 10,000m men's final at the Commonwealth Games.

Sarah Chelangat failed to win a medal in the 5000m women's final as she finished fourth in a race won by Kenya's Beatrice Chebet.

In the 3000m steeplechase heats Uganda's Peruth Chemutai won Heat 3 with a time of 9:34.34 to qualify for the finals.
