Olympic gold medalist (2012) Stephen Kiprotich has pulled out of Uganda's team for the 2017 IAAF World Championship slated for August 4-13 in London.

“Although he had qualified Kiprotich communicated to us that he is not well prepared for the competition and asked to be left out,” President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), Dominic Otuchet told URN on Thursday during the National Athletics Championship at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole in Kampala.

On Wednesday the star athlete retired after 10 laps of the 10,000m race during the National Championships complaining of pain in the muscle.

Otuchet explained that since the IAAF requires three runners for marathon, they then spoke to Moses Kipsiro who had qualified at number four, but the four time Commonwealth gold medalist also declined.

The development is a blow for the 20-man Ugandan team after female runner Adero Nyakisi also pulled out due to an ankle injury. But the Federation President insists the team can still do well in the absence of the other star athletes because they are training seriously. He said the marathon team will now have Solomon Mutai, Robert Chemonges who won the Dusseldorf  Marathon in Germany in May and Alex Chesakit.

The 2017 IAAF World Championships will be the 16th edition and will take place at the Olympic Stadium. London was officially awarded the Championships by the IAAF in 2011.
