Adson Atuhaire, the Kiruhura District LC Vice
Chairperson, has decided to resign his position amid allegations of rape.
Atuhaire, who represents Kitura Sub-County in the district council, decided to
step aside to facilitate ongoing investigations.
He communicated the decision in a September
20th, 2023 letter addressed to the LC V Chairperson, Dan Mukago. Atuhaire
requested permission to remain out of office until the investigations into the rape
allegations against him are concluded. His resignation follows his arrest last week
for allegedly raping a student of Bishop Stuart University in Mbarara.
Police
Spokesperson, Fred Enanga, told journalists on Monday this week that Atuhaire
exchanged contacts with his victim on September 8th, 2023, in Rwentondo, Kakoba
ward, Mbarara City, after she provided them with directions to the Golden Leaf
Bar.
Enanga explained that the suspect was driving
a Toyota Premio with registration number UAT 238Q in the company of two other
males. Later that evening, Atuhaire allegedly called the victim, who agreed to
join him for an evening out.
According to Enanga, the suspect picked up his
victim from her hostel at Kakoba Kyapatoni cell and purchased groceries and
snacks, but on the way back, he allegedly raped her. The victim reported the
incident to the police, leading to Atuhaire's arrest. Police also impounded the
suspect’s vehicle.
Kiruhura District LC V Chairperson, Dan Mukago Rutetebya
confirmed that he had accepted Atuhaire's resignation. Mukago emphasized that
Atuhaire's decision is in line with the laid-down procedures and meant to
protect the image of the district. He, however, maintained that Atuhaire is innocent until proven
guilty or pleads guilty.
Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson,
said Atuhaire is out on bail under strict instructions not to interfere with
the ongoing investigations. Atuhaire declined to comment on the matter, citing
the ongoing investigations and a warning against speaking to the media.
