The officer-in-charge of criminal investigations and intelligence at Kisoro Police station has been arrested for alleged abuse of office.

Detective Assistant Superintendent of Police Reuben Muhwezi was arrested last evening on the orders of Kigezi Regional Police Commander Rosemary Olivia Wawire for allegedly mishandling and sabotaging government programs.

His troubles stem from the release of two suspects who were arrested on 2nd June, 2014 for buying 126 mosquito nets supplied by government to the locals. The two; Innocent Halera and Juliet Nyirabakunzi all residents of Bunagana in Kisoro District, were arrested with Mosquito Nets which had been distributed to the locals.

The mosquito nets were distributed to over 40 districts across the country as part of a government initiative to prevent malaria. The initiative is aimed at ensuring that each household is provided with the appropriate insecticide-treated mosquito nets.

It is alleged that after the supply of mosquito nets, Halera andNyirabakunzi convinced the locals to sell the nets which they bought out with a re-sale plan. However, the officer is said to have released the suspects under unclear circumstances.

He is suspected of receiving a Kickback from the suspects to facilitate their discharge.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate confirms Muhwezi’s arrest. He says investigations are ongoing and the officer will face trial for violating the police code of conduct among other charges upon collection of enough evidence against him.
