Boda Boda operators in Kitgum Municipality have proposed plans to hike transport fares following a surge in the price of petrol.

The pump price for a litre of petrol has risen sharply in the last one week at various fuel stations in Kitgum Municipality and across the country. For instance, in Kitgum Municipality, a litre of petrol rose from 4,200 Shillings to 4,400 and 4,570 Shillings.

Under their umbrella body, Kitgum Municipality Boda Boda Association, the Boda Boda riders say it’s no longer cost-effective to continue charging passengers at old rates with the current high fuel prices.

James Ocaya, the Kitgum Municipality Boda Boda Association publicity secretary says that they resolved to introduce new fares to cover their members from losses.

He says in a meeting held with representatives of Boda Boda riders from various stages on Friday last week, they resolved that transport fares for town services be increased from the usual 1,000 to 2,000 Shillings.  He notes that far to reach areas still within the Municipality will be charged between 3,000 and 4,000 Shillings.

Joseph Ocen, a Boda Boda rider at Mon Bunyo main stage in Pandwong Division says the high fuel price has affected his profit margin at the end of the day since he is still charging clients at the same price.

He says it would be unreasonable to continue charging passengers the same price yet they can’t make profits for a litre of fuel they purchase at the moment.

Ocen notes that the matter has also been made worst with the current increment in engine oil prices.

For instance, Shell Helix which was previously sold at 16,000 now cost 19,000 shillings while Total quartz is being sold at 20,000 up from 16,000 shillings.

Alex Opira, the Kitgum District Principal Commercial Officer acknowledges the price fluctuation of fuel and notes that it’s not only a problem within the district but the entire country.

Opira says although the Boda Boda leadership in the Municipality didn’t involve his office on their proposed price increment for guidance, he has no objection to their resolution saying their move is dictated by price fluctuation.

The commissioner in charge of petroleum supply and distribution, Rev. Frank Justus Tukwasibwe early this month revealed that the rise in fuel is due to the global rise in crude oil price.
