Kitgum Municipal Authorities have halted garbage collection within the municipality over lack of a gazetted dumping site.

This comes several months after sub-county leaders in Labongo Layamo Sub-county blocked the Municipal authorities from dumping waste in their area over health-related concerns.

Located about six kilometres from Kitgum Municipality, the dumping site was purchased from a local landowner and gazetted by Municipal council for waste dumping.

Leaders in the area, however, accuse the Municipal authorities of not properly planning for the site saying hazardous materials were being easily accessed by children before calling for its closure.

Walter Livingstone Tooroma, the Kitgum Municipal Mayor says that the resistance they have faced from local leaders and residents has left them with no other alternative but to halt garbage collection.

He says an alternative piece of land that was purchased some six kilometers Northwest of Kitgum Town in Laraba village in Labongo Amida sub-county for dumping waste has also been blocked by the sub-county leaders leaving their hands tight.

Tooroma says although the Municipal council has the will and ability to collect garbage, they are yet to resolve the pending disagreement between the leaders and residents in the two sub-counties.

With tonnes of garbage now piling in several parts of the Municipality, Tooroma says he is afraid of a possible disease outbreak.

Rhina Kareo, the Kitgum Municipal Public Health Inspector says some residents are now dumping wastes in River Pager one of the biggest water bodies shared by many locals in the district.

She advised residents to store garbage properly while those with refuse pit to utilize them as the Municipal council hatches plans on rescuing the situation.

David Ojara, a taxi operator at Kitgum Main Bus Park says garbage has not been collected at the taxi park for more than a month now.

He says the rotting garbage has created unfavorable working condition for many people due to the strong stench being emitted.
