Kitgum Receives UGX165 Million for COVID-19 Fight

Kitgum District Local Government has received 165 million Shillings from the Ministry of Finance, to support its task force committee in fighting the spread of coronavirus disease- COVID-19.

The funds are part of the 304 billion Shillings supplementary budget recently approved by parliament. Collectively, the local governments will share 36.2 billion Shillings to manage the pandemic in their jurisdictions.

The funds will be used to pay risk allowances for designated medical workers, Village Health Teams, provision of food and essential items for people under quarantine, transport for medical personnel, allowances for drivers and task-force members.

Kitgum District Chief Administrative Officer Martin Jacan Gwokto says that the money from the Central the government will be used to facilitate payment of allowances, fueling and maintenance of vehicles and welfare of personnel in the task-force.

Gwokto says that allowances were already overdue for some of the activities that the task force has been conducting with meagre resources.

He, however, says they will utilize the fund in accordance with the Ministry’s guideline in order not to raise audit queries in the future.

Kitgum Resident District Commissioner William Komakech says they will ensure reorganization of the current task force committee to absorb some members as per the ministry’s guideline.

According to guidelines from the Ministry of Finance, the fund disbursed will support members in committees of surveillance and Laboratory, case management, Risk committee and community engagement. Others are Planning and resource mobilization.
