Josephine Muhindo, the Headteacher, reported that senior three students refused to attend classes last Friday and Monday in protest of their classmates' suspension.
A group of students at Kitholhu Secondary School in
Kithoma-Kanyatsi Town Council, Kasese district, have chosen to abandon their
classes in protest of the suspension of their classmates.
Last week, the school
administration suspended 30 students, mainly from senior four and six,
following a violent strike that resulted in the destruction of school property last
month.
The decision came after investigations linked the 30 learners to the
violence. The protesting students are expressing their dissatisfaction
with the administration, citing issues of maladministration as their main
concern. Josephine Muhindo, the Headteacher, reported that senior
three students refused to attend classes last Friday and Monday in protest of their
classmates' suspension.
She clarified that the suspension of the 30 students was in
accordance with their regulations, which require the administration to suspend
any students involved in strikes or inciting violence within the school. “We
are concerned at this gross indiscipline but we are working closely with
parents to ensure normalcy return,” Muhindo said.
Alfred Bwambale, the Chairperson for the Parents and Teachers
Association (PTA), suspects that the strikes at the school may be influenced by
members of the community who have grievances with the management. He indicated
that they are engaging both parents and political leaders to address the
current situation, though he did not provide further details.
On his part, the Kithoma-Kanyatsi Town Council LC III
Chairperson, Milton Kule Mbwarara, revealed that as political leaders, they
plan to hold a meeting with the board members to plead for the reinstatement of
the suspended students.
In response to the unrest, Lt. Mate Magwara, the Kasese Deputy Resident District Commissioner in charge of Bukonzo County, issued a warning to the students and any other individuals involved in destabilizing the institution to cease their actions immediately.
