Kotido Municipal Councillors on Thursday protested over unpaid allowances.

The angry councillors defied pleas from the speaker, Agnes Lokochil, Deputy Speaker Irar Peter Abrahams and the Town Clerk Seleverio Mukobi Byarufu to proceed with the council session.

The councillors unanimously called off the council meeting to allow the technical team prepare their allowances. They are demanding unpaid allowances and ex-gratia for three quarters in the last financial year. They also claim arrears for committee and council sittings.

Each councillor is entitled to honoraria and ex-gratia of 750,000 shillings in a quarter while every council sitting attracts 70,000 shillings as allowances.

Byarufu said he has already initiated a process for their payment and was only waiting for the money to be paid by Bank of Uganda to the councillors’ accounts.

However, his pleas fell on deaf ears as angry councillors maintained that they would not deliberate council meeting until they are paid their allowances.
