National Unity Platform-NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has cancelled his campaigns in Kalangala.

Kyagulanyi was scheduled to hold his campaign meeting on Friday at Kaala playground in Kalangala Town Council. The venue had been Okayed by the district security committee.

However Rajab Ssemakula, the NUP coordinator for Kalangala, says that he was informed by NUP officials in Kampala that the campaign was cancelled because there were plans to arrest Kyagulanyi and his supporters.

Earlier in the day, security personnel who include the police and army were heavily deployed in the town.

Benon Byamukama, the Kalangala District Police Commander (DPC), says that they had allowed Kyagulanyi to hold one campaign meeting but with a limited number of people.

"Due to security purposes, Kyagulanyi was not allowed to have more than one campaign meeting in Kalangala. This was intended to comply with SOPs since his meetings attract many people," Byamukama said.

On December 30, Kyagulanyi’s campaign was blocked at Kigerekyanvubu forest in Mugoye Sub County.  More than 80 NUP supporters who had accompanied Kyagulanyi on his campaign trail were also arrested.
