Lamwo Residents Petition RDC Over Unending Livestock Thefts

Residents of Agoro Sub County in Lamwo have petitioned the Resident District Commissioner demanding for reinforcement of the military detach in the area to avert livestock thefts by suspected South Sudanese militias.

The sub county has been distressed by cattle raids by Lango speaking militia from South Sudan who sneak into Uganda thorough Geria County in Imatong State of Eastern Equatorial Province.

Noel Kawor Oceng, another resident revealed that on March 24th 2019, two armed raiders attacked Ngacino village about 6:00pm and stole nine cows from Pober.

Denis Onyon, the Agoro Sub County LC 3 Chairperson confirmed the incident. Onyo explains that 127 goats were stolen between February and March by armed thugs from the neighboring South Sudan.

Alberio Tobiolo, the Governor Torit State in Eastern Equatorial Province condemned the continuous raid on communities in Lamwo by armed South Sudanese.   

He said they are striving to end the practice.

The Lamwo Resident District Commissioner, James Nabinsoni Kidega, acknowledges the thin presence of Uganda People’s Defense Forces– UPDF soldiers and Anti-Stock Theft Unit - ASTU personnel at the vast porous border.

Kidega said over 300 Local Defense Unit-LDU personnel who were recruited in November 2018 passed out at the UPDF 5th Division Headquarters in Pader and will be deployed to strengthen the unsecured boarder points in Agoro and Madiopei sub counties.
