LC I Chairpersons, Town Clerk Clash Over Revenue Collection

There is a dispute between Local Council One Chairpersons of Namungondi Town Council in Busia district and town clerk over local revenue collection.

It all started after the town council started charging development fees for buildings in the town council. 

The town council charges Shillings 30,000 for old houses and Shillings 50,000 for those under construction. 

The move hasn’t gone down well with LC I Chairperson. They accuse the office of the town clerk of charging residents exorbitant fees without issuing receipts to those who have paid the money.

 

    Namungodi town council is among the four newly created town councils that were curved from Bulumbi Sub-county in Busia district in the 2016/2017 financial year.

Abel Mayende, the Bumulimba Central LC I chairperson, says residents haven’t been sensitized on how to pay local revenue and the amount they are supposed to pay.

Kefwasi Ouma, a land lord in Namungodi trading center, says he has been charged twice different amounts by town council officials without being issued a receipt.      

Ssumba Ojambo, the Namungodi town clerk says that the amount charged was set in the council meeting held by area councilors.

George Friday, the or Namungodi town council LC III chairperson, says they lack funds to facilitate councilors to sensitize them on local revenue.
