Electoral Commission has disqualified Margaret Tushabe, one of the contestants for the Kibanga Women LC 1 elections in Kalangala district for alleged failure to retire from her civil service.
Tushabe is a secretary in Kalangala District Internal Security Office where she has served for the last eight years. She didn't resign from office to campaign for election in the women council polls.
Tushabe presented herself for election on Tuesday afternoon during the Kibanga Women LC 1 elections. The supporters of her rival, Rose Nagawa immediately notified the Kalangala District Returning Officer, Emmanuel Matsiko prompting him to kick her out of the race.
Richard Mutebi, an eye witness, says a fight later ensued as Tushabe's supporters demanded that their candidate be reinstated. He says Nagawa wasn't at the polling station and never wanted to participate in the elections.
The NRM Chairperson for Kalangala town says Nagawa wrote to the NRM office, which seconded her to become the flag bearer in the village and didn't communicate to the contrary.
Police rushed to the village to enforce order. The Kalangala District Returning Officer, Emmanuel Matsiko confirmed the disqualification of Tushabe from the race.
