Prosecution led by Lt. Hamuza Mulike Hirya informed court chaired by Col. Bernard Tuhame that Apakuto, while in a drunken state, unlawfully caused the death of Ahmed Lokong of Nadomoto village, by shooting using an AK 47 riffle.
The 3rd Division Court Martial in Moroto has
sentenced a local defence unit personnel to 30-years imprisonment for shooting a
civilian dead in Kotido district.
Prosecution led by Lt. Hamuza Mulike Hirya informed court chaired
by Col. Bernard Tuhame that the suspect Logwang Apakuto, while in a drunken state, unlawfully caused the death of Ahmed Lokong
of Nadomoto village, by shooting using an
AK 47 riffle.
Apakuto reportedly went on a shooting spree and in the process injured two people; a civilian identified as Lonyang Napeyon and an LDU personnel,
Lokidi Lokure, an incident that took place in Maaru Sub County in May. According to the prosecution, the convict escaped from Maaru
detach with a gun and 30 rounds of ammunition.
While sentencing Apakuto on Tuesday afternoon, Col. Tuhame observed that the shooting defeated
the purpose for which parents are sending their children to the armed forces. He said
that parents send their children for national duty, to protect them but instead of becoming a threat to their lives.
“This court has listened to all the submissions and
considered your prayers. This court has found your action unacceptable in the
forces, and therefore the court has sentenced you at own plea of guilt for 30
years in a government prison, the Division Court Martial Chairman said.
Col. Tuhame remarked that the sentence will serve as a
warning to those who go outside the barracks to drink while
carrying guns and misuse their guns to kill innocent civilians.
