At least 63 people are locked up at Kampala Central Police Station following their arrest in a swoop by Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

The LDUs conducted the operation in the presence of Ivan Nduhura, the Operations Commander Kampala Central Police Station following a tip off about suspected criminals hiding in street corridors and buildings targeting unsuspecting people.

Some of the suspects were found with drug pellets especially on William Street, Nebbi Park, Kati-Kati building, Shamba Complex, Link Arcade, Link Corner and Nabugabo. The suspects were handcuffed in pairs and led to Kampala CPS for screening.

Those believed to be innocent were released without charge. According to Police, the arrest is part of Tokora Operations, which was launched recently under the Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander, Moses Kafeero. The operations which are conducted by police and LDUs are meant to clean up the city of thugs.

The operations, according to police, won’t stop until the city is free of criminals targeting traders, vendors, city dwellers and other unsuspecting members of the public.  According to police, most of the suspect, say they are idle and have nothing to do for a living.

17 out of the 63 suspects have pending cases while others had been released on bond or bail.  Last week, police arrested 60 suspected street muggers particularly targeting vendors who do business late in the night or very early in the morning.
