Residents, district Leaders and Health Workers are irked by the reported change in architectural plan for the ongoing refurbishment of Nakaseke Hospital.

According to a contract signed between Ministry of Health and Yanjian Company Limited last year, the contractor (Yanjian Company) is supposed to renovate four wards, an Outpatient department complex, and build modern medical waste houses.  The contractor is also expected to construct six staff housing units, a Laundry center and a Kitchen.

The project is estimated at USD 5 Million funding already secured as a grant from the World Bank.

However, Nakaseke district secretary for Health Mariam Kaberuka reveals that that the construction of the six houses was scrapped off the list and recorded as a contractual error. The announcement is contained in a communication from ministry of Health and Yanjian Company officials.

Kaberuka adds that the contractor has subsequently erased construction of staff quarters off its activity list despite the dire need for the units.

She explains that currently Nakaseke Hospital has only 68 out of the required 190 staff units.

Kaberuka says it’s unacceptable for the line Ministry to terminate the construction of housing units knowing that their staffs lack accommodation.

The Nakaseke LC 5 chairman Ignatius Koomu Kiwanuka explains that all the ongoing renovation works at the hospital may create little or no impact if the accommodation question is not resolved.

The Hospital administrators and Health workers who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed receiving the communications in the July review meeting.

They also explained that they were asked to accept an alternative where ministry of health will renovate only two staff units at a cost of Ugx 300 million which they unanimously rejected saying it will create no impact because all staff quarters are in a sorry state.

Yanjian Company Officials couldn’t be reached for a comment. However, ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Asuman Lukwago told URN that he has not received any official complaint over the matter. He nevertheless explained, that they are working within the available resources
