Joseph Musana, the Kasese district police community liaison in-charge, has been arrested for soliciting a bribe of one million shillings from a suspect who was arrested for causing traffic jam in Kasese town.
Michael Musani Sabilla, the Kasese district police commander, says Musana was arrested by detectives after the suspect complained that he had given him the money but he was still in detention.
He explains that Musana is purported to have picked the money from the suspect after promising to help him quickly secure police bond.
He, however, failed to secure the bond prompting the suspect to complain leading to the arrest of the community liaison officer.
After his arrest, Musana was immediately summoned and transferred to Fort Portal police regional headquarters were he is currently detained on the orders of the western regional police commander Wilson Kwanya.
The suspect only identified as Masereka reveals that Joseph Musana approached him on 2nd February, 2013 and arrested him while in Kasindi Market on the Uganda-Democratic Republic of Congo boarder.
He explains that he charged him and with causing traffic jam.
The suspect said that after his arrest Musana demanded for 300,000 shillings to release him on police bond but after paying it he remained in detention.
Bakari Muga Bashir, the Rwenzori region police publicity, confirmed that Joseph Musana has been summoned at the regional police for questioning. He said that he arrived at the regional police on Wednesday and on Thursday is to face the Police Standards Unit.
He says that investigations are under way by the Police Standard Unit (PSU) at the region to establish whether Musana received a bribe from the suspect.
Bakari says once investigations are complete he will be charged with soliciting the bribe.
