Lightning Kills Three in Rubanda

According to Oyesiga’s son, Ivan Muhwezi, the victims were struck by lightning on Friday at 5:30 pm while at Kamusegwa village. He says that the incident occurred during a heavy downpour that lasted for about three hours.

Three people have been killed by lightning in Rubanda district. They have been identified as Stanley Sunday Owoyesiga alias Tissue,63, a headteacher of Golden Star High School, Ben Kwikiriza,16, a resident of Rwamuyora village in Muko sub-county and Bright Orikiriza, a resident of Karambo Village.

According to Oyesiga’s son, Ivan Muhwezi, the victims were struck by lightning on Friday at 5:30 pm while at Kamusegwa village. He says that the incident occurred during a heavy downpour that lasted for about three hours.

Elly Maate, the Police Spokesperson for Kigezi Region confirms says that six sheep were also struck dead.  Maate says that all the victims had sought shelter from the heavy rain.

Maate says that the lightning also injured a resident of Kamuserwa village in Nyarurambi ward, Rubanda town council on identified as Happy, who is undergoing treatment at Muko Health Center IV.

On August 12, Vanesta Ayebare, 15, a pupil at Green Field Nursery and Primary School in Hamurwa town council Rubanda district was struck dead by lightning while in bed sleeping.

Last week, Edidiya Turyatemba,42, and Diana Kajowa,31 all residents of Kinaba sub-county, Kanungu district were also struck dead by lightning. The lightning left three people injured.

According to the 2021 National Risk and Vulnerability Atlas of Uganda a booklet that locates areas that are prone to disasters in the country including the preparedness, response, and management strategies, South Western Uganda especially Kanungu and Rubanda district are listed among districts prone to Landslides and flooding and lightning.
